Baking process plays an important role in creation of a successful PCB (Printed Circuit Board) board. It removes moisture from the PCB to make it safe for assembly and further use. PCBs are made from hygroscopic materials (like FR-4 epoxy glass laminates) which naturally absorbs moisture from ambient air. This trapped moisture may cause corrosion, internal shorts, reduction in interfacial adhesion strength and blistering in solder mask etc.; therefore, it becomes essential to remove moisture from PCB to make it well accepted. The moisture removal process is called baking or drying. The safe temperature range of baking is 80°C to 125°C. The PCB baking process is performed in a drying chamber often called PCB Baking Oven or PCB Drying Oven. It is a kind of thermal chamber especially designed to remove absorbed moisture from the bare or assembled Printed Circuit Boards.
PCBs are placed inside the oven on the shelves (trays) at the controlled temperature between 100°C to 125°C for a predetermined time. While baking, it is important to ensure that temperature must be stable and uniform throughout the chamber in order to achieve uniform drying and keep the material safe from damage.
