UV Weathering Test Chamber

A UV weather test chamber is also known as a UV accelerated weathering test chamber or UV exposure chamber. This specialized laboratory equipment is used to simulate and accelerate the effects of sunlight and UV radiation on various materials and products including textile, cables, plastic parts, color coated plates etc. It is commonly employed in industries such as automotive, aerospace, textiles, plastics, coatings, and electronics to assess the durability and long-term performance of materials when exposed to sunlight and UV radiation.

This chamber is widely used by quality control and research and development for most plastics, textiles and pigments etc. A UV Weather Test chamber is suited for standards including ASTM D4329, ASTM G151, ISO 4892-1/3, ISO 11507, ISO 11895, EN 927-6, EN 12224, SAE J2020 and JIS D 0205. Different manufacturers use UV weather test chambers to compare different materials, coatings, or formulations for UV resistance. The results obtained from UV weather test chamber testing is very important for designing and developing products that can withstand varied outdoor environmental conditions, such as sunlight, rain, and temperature fluctuations. A UV weather test chamber typically comprise of:

  • UV Light Source: A UV Weather Test Chamber is equipped with UV lamps that emit UV radiation similar to that of the sun. Depending upon type of specimen and test standard we use UVA and UVB radiation tubes.
  • Temperature and Humidity Control: This UV test chamber also controls temperature and humidity levels to create artificial environmental conditions. UV exposure combined with varying temperature and humidity can lead to accelerated degradation of materials; usually humidity is not controlled and only displayed on the screen. It is automatically generated 85% or higher.
  • Sample Mounting Arrangement: Samples or specimen of the material being tested are placed inside the chamber. Corrosion resistant stainless steel sample holders are used on both sides front and rear sides are fitted. These sample holders hold the specimen in form of finished products, components, coatings, textiles, plastics, or any other material that needs to be evaluated for its UV resistance.
  • Exposure Test Cycles: The UV Weather chamber runs exposure test cycles that simulate different environmental conditions including alternating periods of UV radiation, darkness, and controlled temperature and humidity changes. The duration of the test can vary based on the material and the level of acceleration desired and test standards.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: During the test, various parameters are monitored, such as UV intensity, temperature, humidity, and exposure time. After the test, the samples are evaluated for changes in color, gloss, surface integrity, mechanical properties, and other relevant characteristics. This helps determine how well the material withstands UV exposure over time.

In UV ageing test chambers ultraviolet radiation is created by UV lamps, dew and rain impact are created by forced condensation and heat is generated by heating elements. UV lamps are available UVA (340nm) or UVB (313nm) as per test requirement. For water spray, there are nozzles that work with motor pump. Controlling function is completely programmable; for this purpose, we use 7-inch color screen controller. It allows you to do settings of temperature, light and water spray test along with time. Overall construction is made of stainless steel 304. In order to keep samples, there is a perforated tray, which is height adjustable.
