WHAT IS A SALT SPRAY CHAMBER?
A salt spray chamber is a corrosion test chamber that exposes samples to a controlled, continuous mist of salt solution at a set temperature. It speeds up corrosion so you can judge in hours or days how well a paint, powder coating, plating, anodizing or passivation layer will resist rust and degradation. The test is widely used in quality control and R&D for:
- Automotive parts: brake components, fasteners, brackets, wheels
- Fasteners and hardware: nuts, bolts, screws, fittings, tools
- Electroplating and surface finishing: zinc, nickel, chrome, anodizing
- Paints and powder coatings: panels and coated sheets
- Electrical and electronic parts: connectors, enclosures, switchgear
- Aerospace, marine and defence components
WORKING PRINCIPLE OF A SALT SPRAY CHAMBER
An artificial corrosive environment is created in the salt spray chamber by continuous spraying of a salt solution (5% NaCl in water). A controlled temperature is maintained (35 °C ± 2 °C in the working chamber and 45°C in the air saturator or brine tank). At a relative humidity greater than 95%, a uniform salt mist is distributed over the samples to evaluate the level of oxidation.
The chamber produces a dense, uniform salt fog like this:
- Salt solution: 5% sodium chloride (NaCl) in distilled or deionised water is stored in the brine tank. A typical mix is 500 g NaCl in 9.5 L water.
- Fog generation: compressed air at a regulated pressure of 0.7–1.7 kg/cm² (about 0.7–1.7 bar) passes through the air saturator and then the spray nozzle, which atomises the brine into fine fog.
- Temperature control: the working chamber is held at 35 °C ± 2 °C. The air saturator (bubble tower) is heated higher, typically about 45–48 °C depending on air pressure, so the air reaches the chamber fully humidified; 95% or higher.
- Exposure: samples sit on V and O shaped PVC rods at a tilt of 15–30° from vertical, with relative humidity above 95%.
- Fog collection: a collection funnel and calibration tube verify a fallout rate of 1.0–2.0 mL per 80 cm² per hour, as the standards require.
- Evaluation: after the set duration (commonly 24 to 1000+ hours), samples are inspected for red rust, white rust, blistering and creepage.

IMPORTANT PARTS OF A SALT SPRAY CHAMBER
- Main chamber: Main chamber is made of thick PVC plastic which is corrosion resistant. Main chamber also have water over flow valve and cleaning drain valve. There is also an air tight closing lid with transparent window, which is manually operated or pneumatically operated depending upon the model features.
- Brine Tank: It is also called salt solution reservoir where Sodium Chloride (NaCl) and water solution is kept to generate salt fog; ideal combination is 500gm NaCl in 9.5L water.
- Spray Nozzle & fog collector: Glass nozzle is fitted to spray salt fog with the help of pressure regulator. Compressed air pressure (0.7 to 1.7 kg/cm²) is provided to generate fog spray. A fog collector is a device to measure fog condensation rate 1–2 ml/hr per 80 cm² as per ASTM standard.
- Safety Features: Over temperature safety and low water level safety protections are important features.
- Sample Holder: V shape and O shape rods are provided to keep samples at 15° to 30° tilt position in order to optimized fog exposure to the samples.
- Control panel: Control panel is fitted on right side of the equipment in which temperature controllers are fitted to control temperature of main chamber and the brine tank, salt fog test timer and some ON/OFF switches for machine on/off, timer on/off and defog. Low water level indicators are also there. Color touch screen controller with data recording is an optional part.
